Shifting Trends in Healthcare Education: Entry Year 2025

The pursuit of careers in healthcare continues to evolve as the latest Entry Year (EY) 2025 data highlights notable shifts in application and matriculation patterns across dental, medical, and veterinary schools. These changes reflect both the growing interest in these professions and subtle variations in academic benchmarks.

For those interested in exploring the data further, detailed reports for each field are available:

Dental Schools: An Upward Trend

Dental education saw a marked increase in interest for EY 2025, with applications rising from 1,172 in EY 2024 to 1,267. Among these, reapplicants grew significantly, jumping from 285 to 336. This growth in applications was mirrored by improvements in academic metrics.

Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores showed an increase in the average Perceptual Ability (PA) score, climbing from 19.6 to 19.8, while the Academic Average (AA) held steady at 20.2. For matriculated students, academic performance saw an upward trajectory, with PA GPAs increasing to 20.3 and AA GPAs reaching 21.8. The average overall GPA for matriculated students rose to 3.80, compared to 3.74 in EY 2024, indicating a continued trend toward academic excellence among those entering dental programs.

Medical Schools: Growing Numbers, Steady Performance

Medical schools experienced a surge in interest, with total applications increasing from 6,472 in EY 2024 to 6,851 in EY 2025. This growth was particularly evident among Texas residents, whose applications rose from 4,878 to 5,207. Despite the influx of applicants, key academic metrics remained consistent.

The average overall GPA for applicants stayed at 3.70, while the BCPM (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) GPA also held firm at 3.60. The average MCAT score saw a slight decrease, moving from 506.5 in EY 2024 to 506.4 in EY 2025. However, for matriculated students, the EY 2024 cohort demonstrated a strong academic foundation with an average GPA of 3.84 and an MCAT score of 511.5, both showing improvement over previous years.

Veterinary Schools: Subtle Shifts

The veterinary school applicant pool remained stable, with a slight dip in applications from 1,349 in EY 2024 to 1,340 in EY 2025. Despite the minor decrease, the academic strength of applicants showed steady growth.

The average overall GPA rose from 3.41 to 3.45, and the average BCPM GPA increased from 3.30 to 3.36. These gradual improvements highlight the competitive nature of veterinary school admissions and the sustained commitment of applicants to meet rigorous academic standards.
