It's no secret that entry year 2021 produced a record number of applicants to dental
school. Here's how it compares to other application cycles:
Dental applicants in entry year 2021 grew by 10%, or 94 applicants. This increase
represents the largest jump in applicants to dental school in the past 5 years. In
previous application cycles, we saw:
Entry Year 2020

- a 38% decrease in applications or 38 fewer applications over the previous cycle for
a total 963 applications
Entry Year 2019

- a 1% increase in applications or 11 applications over the previous cycle for a total
of 1001 applications
Entry Year 2018

- a 2% increase in applications or 16 applications over the previous cycle for a total
of 990 applications
Entry Year 2017

- a total of 550 applications
It is worth noting that the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center El Paso - Woody L. Hunt
School of Dental Medicine joined TMDSAS in spring 2020.
What do these trends mean?
Applying to dental school has always been competitive as observed with the rising
GPA in both the applicant and matriculant pools.
EY2021 applicants to dental schools had an average GPA of 3.50, which has remained
steady for three cycles. Similarly DAT performance in Academic Average and Perceptual
Ability has remained steady with EY2021 applicants earning an average 19.9 and 20.0,
respectively.
